5 Ways to Make Fitness Fun

The best fitness plan is one you can stick to and enjoy. Exercising can feel monotonous and will always be a chore if you dread doing it. Let's evaluate how we can make fitness more enjoyable, and as a result, more sustainable. There are many ways to incorporate fun into your exercise routine that can help us develop a plan that lasts. Here are five ways to make fitness fun and worth your while.

  1. 1
    Exercise with a Friend

“Champions come in pairs of two.” Your fitness journey doesn’t have to be travelled alone. Helping each other stay accountable can keep you motivated. It can also spark some healthy competition and make fitness feel like a challenge more than an inconvenience. Exercising with your friends or family can keep you engaged in what you’re doing and give you the confidence to keep going. Spark some comradery and creativity by inviting those closest to you to join in.

  2. 2
    Join a Class

Have you ever considered joining an online fitness class? Many exercise classes are now offered virtually. You can participate in workout classes at home with minimal equipment. All you need is an internet connection. On demand classes are offered virtually as a livestream or as a recording. You can even download apps that include fitness plans and workouts to suit your needs. There are many resources that allow individuals of all fitness levels to participate, collaborate and challenge each other. Do your research and find a class that suits you.

  3. 3
    Change the Scene

Sometimes you don’t have to change how you work out, just when and where. The workouts you do indoors can likely be performed outside. If you’ve been riding your bike or walking around your neighborhood for months then maybe it’s time to explore and find some new places to walk in your area. There are likely many walking trails nearby that you have yet to find. Exploring new places with your family is also an added bonus and can help the entire family stay more active.

  4. 4
    Create a Dedicated Space

Quit working out in your bedroom! Getting out of the room you sleep in will strengthen the mental association between the bedroom and rest mode. This is also why having a preferred space to exercise in your house can make all the difference. Having a dedicated space allows you to focus and can help get you into an exercise mode. It also eliminates the guesswork and distractions that come with exercising in high traffic areas in your home (like the living room). Outfit your new workout area with a yoga mat, weights, inspirational wall décor and a speaker to take your fitness to the next level.

  5. 5
    Start Simply, Simply Start

Breaking up your workout routine into smaller sessions can make working out more manageable. Often times, we start a fitness regimen that is extreme and far from what we’re accustomed to. We can make small changes by scaling how much we take on at one time. This approach can make fitness enjoyable by starting at a level that’s comfortable for you. Can you get into the habit of walking for just ten minutes per day after work? Can you meditate for five minutes per day? We don’t need to overhaul our lifestyle to start reaping the benefits of regular exercise. Making small adjustments to your daily routine can add up over time. Just don’t stop.
