POLICY

Effective April 1, 2011, all durable medical equipment (DME) claims will require a modifier specifying whether the equipment is for rental or purchase

for codes E0001-E9999 or K0001-K9999

. Modifier NU (New equipment/Purchase) or Modifier RR  (Rental) must be used on all durable medical equipment (DME) claims. Durable medical equipment(DME) claims that are submitted without the appropriate modifier will be rejected.

The coding guidelines outlined in Coding Policy should not be used in lieu of the Member's specific benefits plan language.

POLICY HISTORY

4/8/11-Policy revised. Phrase, "for codes E0001-E9999 or K0001-K9999" was added to the first sentence. Sentence, "All supplies must be filed with the NU modifier only." was removed. No other changes were made.
