Managing Your Cholesterol
Managing your cholesterol is an important part of being healthy, and adopting healthy lifestyle habits plays a major role. A healthy lifestyle includes a good diet, regular exercise, healthy weight management and avoiding tobacco products.
The first step in managing your cholesterol is knowing your numbers and talking with your Network Provider about steps you can take to maintain or achieve healthy numbers for cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar and weight. Schedule a wellness visit with your Primary Care Network Provider to have your health numbers measured and have a conversation about what they mean. Our Healthy You! wellness benefit provides Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi members with an annual wellness visit including age and gender-appropriate screenings and immunizations at no out-of-pocket cost.
If your doctor recommends taking steps to manage your cholesterol, best-practice medical guidelines indicate that the first steps should include:
- Sticking to a heart-healthy diet including increased vegetables, fruit and whole grains with limited salt, sweets, sugary drinks, red meats and saturated/trans fats;
- Participating in regular aerobic physical activity 3-4 times per week;
- Avoiding tobacco products;
- Maintaining a healthy weight;
- Managing any other elevated health numbers for blood pressure and/or blood sugar.
If your doctor still thinks you need a prescription drug, ask them to prescribe you one of the many lower cost alternatives available. With the release of the generic for Crestor on May 2, 2016, if you currently take brand Crestor, talk to your Network Provider about switching to the generic version or a lower cost alternative already available.
Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi is committed to providing our members with the information they need to make wise choices when it comes to managing their health and their prescription drug costs. It’s just one more reason why it’s good to be Blue.
