Important Information Regarding Healthcare Reform

Our commitment to a healthier Mississippi begins with giving you access to affordable health and wellness benefits while operating with administrative efficiencies designed to help you manage your costs. Because of our focus on health and wellness initiatives designed to help our members be healthy, we have also been able to stay ahead of healthcare reform legislation. As we learn more about the recently enacted Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), we are also learning how it will affect our members. Here are just some of the reform issues we have already implemented, but have not yet become requirements through PPACA:

Dependent Age – Several years ago we changed the dependent coverage age to 25, allowing more students and young adults to remain covered under their parent or guardian's policy. We have now extended coverage to 26 years of age, for underwritten groups, ahead of the legislative requirements which have not come into effect.

Pre-existing Condition Exclusion - In June 2009, we voluntarily removed the pre-existing condition exclusion for our underwritten groups with 50 or fewer employees, giving more Mississippians access to the coverage they need. This means the majority of our group business is already aligned with the reform legislation. The removal of the pre-existing condition exclusion is optional for our underwritten groups with 51 or more employees at the point of sale or renewal.
