Blue Distinction+ designation is part of Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi's statewide Cardiac Care Collaborative with its Network Providers that provide cardiovascular disease management. The collaborative focuses on best practice care coordination with the goal of healthier outcomes through an emphasis on quality and prevention.
Heart disease is prevalent among Americans, but is also preventable with simple lifestyle habits. Although you cannot avoid some risk factors including family history or age, you can take steps to reduce your risk by eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, avoiding tobacco use and having annual health screenings.
Eat heart healthy by focusing on fresh fruits and vegetables, fiber-rich whole grains and lean protein. Limit or avoid fried foods, trans fats (found in cookies, cakes, pastries, fast foods, etc.), whole milk and fatty meats. Some foods, like salmon, almonds, walnuts, beans, oatmeal and spinach can help protect against cardiovascular disease.
Regular exercise strengthens your heart and cardiovascular system, lowers your blood pressure, increases your endurance, improves your circulation and can even help you achieve or maintain a healthy weight. If you have a pre-existing health condition or have never participated in regular exercise, you should always get your healthcare provider's approval before beginning a program. Walking, bicycling, swimming and dancing are just some of the ways you can make physical activity part of your daily life.
Tobacco use is one of the most preventable causes of death and heart disease, and even brief exposure to secondhand smoke can trigger a heart attack. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published an extensive report on the effects of secondhand smoke and how it can affect the heart. If you use tobacco and would like to quit, the "be tobacco-free" section of our website offers helpful information on making that important decision.
Regular health screenings with your healthcare provider can provide insight to your heart health through cholesterol and blood pressure screenings and more. This can be especially beneficial to those with a family history of heart disease and others who also have a higher risk of developing this condition. Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi's Healthy You! wellness benefit covers an annual wellness visit with a Network Provider at no out-of-pocket cost, which includes these important health screenings. Visit the Healthy You! section of our website for more information.
Our goal is to help all Mississippians be healthy and live healthy lives. By implementing programs that focus on quality, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi is providing Mississippians access to Network Providers who practice evidence-based medicine.
