Important Information Regarding Healthcare Reform

Our commitment to a healthier Mississippi begins with giving you access to affordable health and wellness benefits while operating with administrative efficiencies designed to help you manage your healthcare costs. Because of our focus on health and wellness initiatives designed to help our members be healthy, we have also been able to stay ahead of healthcare reform legislation. As we learn more about the recently enacted Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), we are also learning how it will affect our members. Here are just some of the reform issues we have already implemented, but have not yet become effective through PPACA.

Underwritten Groups
Dependent Age – Several years ago we changed the dependent coverage age to 25, allowing more students and young adults to remain covered under their parent or guardian's policy. We have now extended this to 26 years of age, ahead of the legislative requirements of the new reform legislation.

Pre-existing Condition Exclusion - In June 2009, we voluntarily removed the pre-existing condition exclusion for groups with 50 or fewer employees, giving more Mississippians access to the coverage they need. This means the majority of our group business is already aligned with future legislation. The removal of the pre-existing condition exclusion is also optional for our groups with 51 or more employees.

Individual Coverage - Blue Care
Dependent Age - Currently, there is no age limit for our Blue Care members. This policy is age-rated and remains effective as long as the member chooses.

Pre-existing Condition Exclusion - We have removed the exclusion for pre-existing conditions for Blue Care coverage beginning April 1, 2010. Effective April 1, 2010, for individual customers, we no longer administratively review claims for pre-existing conditions.  

As a Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi underwritten member, you have access to preventive coverage that is more comprehensive than the reform legislation. Our Healthy You! wellness benefit provides an annual visit with a Network Provider for age-and-gender related screenings at no cost.
