Who says being active can’t be fun? There’s a whole new generation of fitness activities that gives you freedom to choose how you get fit. So whether it’s running, walking, dancing or some other activity, learn how you can make getting fit FUN!
Find a Friend
Everything is better when you’ve got a friend! Having a friend or workout buddy can help you stay motivated and accountable to your fitness goals. If it’s someone you look forward to spending time with, your exercise session will be even more enjoyable. A friend is also likely to encourage you to try something new that you might not on your own.
Group fitness classes are often offered at local health clubs and can give variety to your workout routine. Classes are led by instructors who are knowledgeable about the specific exercise. They also serve as enthusiastic motivators and help ensure participants are using proper form and technique. There are often many class options, ranging from spinning, yoga and dance to some very unique styles of classes. Check with your local health club or fitness center to see what classes are offered. Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi members can receive discounts on membership fees at select wellness centers around the state. “Play” a Sport
If you “play” something, it’s sure to be fun! Playing a sport like tennis, soccer, kickball or golf is yet another way you can be active and have fun doing something YOU enjoy. Maybe you used to play a sport when you were young, but lost interest as you got older or had less time to devote to it. Why not give it a try again?
Listening to music can make many activities more enjoyable - especially exercise. Create a playlist of your favorite tunes, especially those that motivate and excite you. Music can help you go that extra mile even when you feel like taking it slow!
Change It Up
Doing the same thing day after day can become boring. Having variety in our daily routine keeps us interested and motivated. Exercise is no different. Participating in different activities not only keeps you from getting bored, but also keeps your body from getting used to the same exercise. So, if you normally take a daily walk, take a day (or two) each week to try yoga or a dance routine. It will keep your body (and mind) alert!
Track Your Progress
What is more motivating than having clothes that fit better and feeling healthier? Don’t just weigh yourself regularly. You should also measure yourself, including your waist, hips, thighs, arms, stomach and more. Record your progress regularly and watch those numbers shrink. This can really keep you motivated to continue your exercise routine and keep you on track to achieve your goals.
Making exercise part of your daily routine is one of the best things you can do for your health. And it doesn’t have to be a chore. When you make it fun, you’re more likely to stick with it.
