Helping You Be Healthy and Stay Healthy
Helping you be as healthy as possible is at the core of our commitment to a healthier Mississippi. We encourage you to practice healthy lifestyle habits that will make a significant impact on your health. Eat healthy, exercise, be tobacco-free and see your healthcare provider each year. These habits can help you avoid chronic medical conditions like heart disease and diabetes, which can increase your healthcare costs and affect your quality of life. By taking care of yourself and your health, you can live a longer, healthier life.

Health Reform
Our strong commitment to a healthier Mississippi, with its focus on access to affordable health and wellness benefit plans that help our members be healthy, demonstrates our leadership position in health and wellness. We are well-positioned to respond to the recently enacted healthcare reform legislation, and in many ways, our proactive policies already fit with the ideals of reform and reflect how we have positioned our company to be out in front of reform legislation.
Here are just a few examples of how our leadership and vision are keeping us in the forefront of healthcare reform:
A part of healthcare reform requires dependent coverage up to age 26 later this year. For some time, we already covered underwritten groups’ dependents up to age 25. So our decision to extend the coverage to age 26 is simple and we have made it effective immediately.
For members covered under Blue Care, individuals can be covered continuously regardless of their age, so there is no dependent age limit. Effective April 1, 2010, for individual customers, we no longer administratively review claims for pre-existing conditions.
For many years, our Healthy You! wellness benefit has provided members with preventive care at no cost to the member - in some cases beyond the benefits required by the reform legislation.
Due to our focus on access, health and wellness, administrative efficiency and cost savings, we are very well positioned for any future changes - and in many ways ahead of the healthcare reform legislation.
How to Protect Yourself from Healthcare Fraud!
- Safeguard your Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi ID card and Social Security Number.
- Beware of "free" services, especially if you're asked to provide your insurance ID card. The services may not be free and could be fraudulently charged to you or your insurance company.
- Compare your Explanation of Benefit statements to your medical bills to verify the services you received.
