Regular exercise is one of the most effective ways to manage our health, but it can sometimes be difficult to find time to participate in the recommended 30 minutes per day. That's why Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi is encouraging everyone to take a walk during the lunchtime hour as part of National Walk @ Lunch Day on Wednesday, April 26.
National Walk @ Lunch Day encourages people to use their lunch break to get the recommended 30 minutes each day. Because most of our day is built around our work schedule, National Walk @ Lunch Day is designed to complement - not compete with - our busy lifestyles.
The Walk @ Lunch Day initiative was started to encourage more people to begin a walking program and improve health with each and every step. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the average cost to treat illness and chronic disease caused by inactive lifestyles is $1,000 per American family every year. However, just 30 minutes of exercise on most days of the week can have a significant impact in reducing obesity and the associated healthcare costs.
Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi is partnering with businesses to host lunchtime walking events in towns across the state. For those in the central Mississippi area, we are also hosting a Walk @ Lunch Day event at Renaissance at Colony Park located at 1000 Highland Colony Parkway in Ridgeland on Wednesday, April 26 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. All are welcome, and local businesses are asked to encourage employees to attend and walk for 30 minutes during their lunch break.
