From the time we are children, we’ve been taught to use the “buddy system” to stay safe. Did you know it can also be helpful as adults? Using the buddy system and having a workout partner can greatly increase your success in achieving results and sticking with an exercise program.
Many of us can find it difficult to begin and stick with a healthy lifestyle program simply because we don't have anyone to keep us accountable. But having someone show up each day and depend on you for the same thing can increase your odds. Here’s why!
They Support Your Efforts in Achieving Your Fitness Goals
Your workout buddy is depending on you to keep them accountable and vice versa. We all have days where our energy is lagging or we simply don’t want to get out of bed. Having a supportive and dependable partner makes this easier! Let’s say you’re training for your first 5K race. It’s a lot easier to quit unless you have someone at your side encouraging you to pick up the pace and make it to the finish line.
Exercise is More Fun
Working out alone can be, well, lonely! Social interaction with a partner can definitely help make your fitness routine more fun. Catch up on the latest life events, news and share workout tips to make the day a little brighter!
It’s Easier to Try New Things
There’s always strength in numbers, especially when it comes to trying something new. That includes exercise! Many people are hesitant to try a new exercise class, but with a workout partner you don't have to try it alone. So, try that new yoga or spin class and bring a friend!
Competition Makes You Work Harder
Let’s face it…most of us harbor a competitive streak! A study reported by the National Institutes of Health found that to maximize motivation, your workout partner should be about 40 percent better than you. That’s not enough to deter most people since it’s definitely an attainable goal. The study also found that men who were paired with a woman partner who was deemed to be “fitter” than themselves were even more motivated than when paired with another man who was fitter.
These are just a few of many reasons why having a workout partner can benefit you. So if you’re looking to choose a workout partner, you may want to consider character traits such as how well you like them, a good attitude, compatible styles of motivation, similar goals and having similar schedules. So, just like when you were a kid, the buddy system can still support you as an adult!
