With the arrival of the winter months, the colder weather and shorter daylight hours mean less time spent outdoors and being active. While a gym membership is an excellent way to continue your exercise program during the cold weather months, there are many ways you can establish or maintain an exercise program in your home. Here are some tips for staying active this winter.
Body Weight Workouts
Arguably better than any piece of equipment, your own body can be the best piece of equipment you can use. And you don't even need a lot of space to use it! Lunges, squats, sit ups, crunches, mountain climbers and plank exercises are just some of the many moves you can do without any additional exercise equipment. Increase your calorie burn by resting no more than 20-30 seconds between each move. Burn even more calories by adding a 1-minute cardio blast, like jumping jacks, between each move.
The fitness industry has created numerous opportunities for home exercise programs with video workouts designed to meet the needs of a variety of interests and fitness levels. You can find exercise videos focused on yoga, aerobics, strength training and many other activities, but the best workout is going to be one you enjoy and can stick with.
Durable, portable and extremely effective, resistance bands are an excellent alternative to dumbbells or other weight equipment and are extremely versatile. They are available in various levels of resistance and can be used in a variety of ways to provide a total body workout.
Make Your Own Home Gym
If you want more variety and options for your home workouts, clear a space and create your own home gym. Decide what equipment you need to support your goals, whether it's a stationary bike, treadmill, dumbbells, resistance ball or other equipment. Also, decide how much money you want to invest in a home gym and be sure to stick within your budget.
